STUNNING FINISH FOR ASHBURTON'S MOST OPULENT NEW COMMERCIAL BUILDING

Murney Main Building, Ashburton

A new, high-end commercial building for the Ashburton CBD. One, the developers wanted to be recognised for its quality, for the next 200 years. A unique feat of engineering and architecture resulting in four levels of high end, highly detailed commercial space. Home to a bank, a bar and restaurant, apartment living and corporate office space, the Murney Main building at the intersection of East & Burnett Streets, more than met its brief when it opened for business in December 2020.

Developed by the Murney Family Trust, construction of the stunning copper-clad building, was led by main contractor Bradford Building Group. The client expected nothing less than perfection from the trades selected for the project. When it became clear the original tiler wasn’t up to scratch the designer called Josh at CBA Tiling.

A unique building, attracting plenty of interest and renown for its high-quality workmanship throughout.

– Action

“In all my time, I’d never been part of a commercial build that required this level of detail,” Josh says. CBA Tiling set about establishing a team and a plan for the works which included:

  • A grand lobby on each level with wall and floor tiling
  • Mitred corners and copper strips between tile rows
  • Tiling an 80 step staircase - bull-nosed and mitred along each side and tiled up to the stringers.
  • 60 sq metres of tessellated tiling on the second level restaurant, ‘The Fine Lion.’

The tessellated tiles contained 525 pieces in every square metre, so was a slow task but the end result was stunning and will last the life of the building.

– Result

From start to finish the build took four years and CBA Tiling was involved at various times throughout all finishing stages. The grand new Murney Main building is now one of the tallest on the CBD horizon with views across the Canterbury Plains. A unique building, attracting plenty of interest and renown for its high-quality workmanship throughout.
